Hello.
My name is Titi and welcome to BAME it on the Sunshine.
Even though I started this blog as part of my MA course in Children's Literature, I will try not to bore you with too much theory, instead I aim to discuss topics in an engaging and relatable manner.
I always used to say that I hate talking, let alone talking about myself. Well, that's a bit of a lie! I love talking. I was just never confident enough to voice my own opinion out loud in public. You definitely can't get more public than this!
So here goes... I was born in Germany and at the age of 12 moved to the UK. It wasn't until I moved to Nigeria in 2008, that I became more aware of the impact race and racism have had on my life. Living in a country where everyone looks like you, where you are the majority is something I had never experienced before and to be frank, I loved it. I still love it. It wasn't until then that I became truly comfortable within my own skin, not feeling the need to continuously apologise for my existence. Up until recently, I was of the opinion that growing up racism never really affected me. While this is somewhat true, being the only black kid in my classroom from age 5 to 20 definitely had an effect on me, albeit a subconscious one, as well as on the way I saw myself.
When I was younger, my mother attended the much dreaded PTA meetings. It was at one of those sessions that one of my teachers told her that she would be lucky if I ever made it to university. So with no further ado, Herr Hess, this one is for you ❤️
